Why is it important?
-
The approach to teaching literacy is shifting
Schools in the United States and Canada are beginning to realize that their current toolset of “Balanced Literacy” has not been effective in teaching reading skills. The Science of Reading recommends schools shift their approach to direct and explicit instruction in reading and writing - the way Novel Tutoring has helped hundreds of students learn how to read.
-
Most students struggle with reading
Recent studies and news reports across the United States and Canada show that reading is a challenge for 65% of grade 4 students - and yet it is a fundamental skill required for learning and future success. While some students have a more urgent need for support, all students can benefit from our Structured Literacy methodology.
-
Novel helps to close the reading gap
Teachers and schools are trying to adapt their approach to meet the needs of struggling readers. However, a lack of resources and limited access to appropriate training is leaving them without a way forward. We are here to support parents and teachers and provide students with the best chances to acquire critical reading and writing skills.

Tutors start by conducting an Orton-Gillingham-based assessment to evaluate your child’s specific literacy levels and remedial needs.
Through the assessment, we also learn about your child’s interest and what makes them passionate about learning.
We then create a customized plan of action that meets the learning needs of your child.
Our tutors work with your child in 1:1 tutoring sessions twice a week to implement the learning plan.
-
Virtual tutoring sessions are available for students anywhere in Canada and the United States.
Following the Orton-Gillingham Approach, Novel tutors teach your child all the important mechanics of reading, writing and spelling.
A tutoring session is 30 minutes and takes a student through a structured basic to complex lesson plan. Students are introduced to the learning objectives and multi-sensory strategies are deployed to support effective processing and long-term retention of the concept. Our tutors build active learning components into each lesson and make sure to accommodate the different learning styles of our students.
Novel has sourced various online tools and resources that align with the Orton-Gillingham approach and help make each lesson fun and interactive.
-
Expect a minimum of two 30-minute tutoring sessions per week. We offer sessions in the morning before school and in the afternoon after school from Monday and Friday.
Once you have set a schedule with your tutor, you can expect for it to stay consistent over time.
-
The length of your child’s tutoring journey depends on their specific learning stage and needs.
The Novel Curriculum covers a period of 2+ years, but we support students as long as it’s needed to feel confident in the classroom and beyond.
-
If you can’t make a session, we will need a 24 hours notice for cancellations.
-
We will schedule and invoice your tutoring sessions in advance for the upcoming month, and request payment up front.
We accept payment via credit card.
-
We do offer in-person tutoring, however availability is geographically limited to families located in the Greater Toronto Area in Canada. Please contact us to inquire if in-person tutoring is available for you.

This intensive course runs for one week and includes a literacy assessment, 25 hours of in-person one-to-one Orton-Gillingham remediation with a Novel tutor, and an additional 9 hours of follow-up time with their tutor. During this “maintenance time”, students will work with their tutor to make sure all learning objectives are solidified.
At this time, our Intensive Reading Recovery course is only offered to students located in the Greater Toroto Area in Canada.
