Why is it important?

  • The approach to teaching literacy is shifting

Schools in the United States and Canada are beginning to realize that their current toolset of “Balanced Literacy” has not been effective in teaching reading skills. The Science of Reading recommends schools shift their approach to direct and explicit instruction in reading and writing - the way Novel Tutoring has helped hundreds of students learn how to read.

  • Most students struggle with reading

Recent studies and news reports across the United States and Canada show that reading is a challenge for 65% of grade 4 students - and yet it is a fundamental skill required for learning and future success. While some students have a more urgent need for support, all students can benefit from our Structured Literacy methodology.

  • Novel helps to close the reading gap

Teachers and schools are trying to adapt their approach to meet the needs of struggling readers. However, a lack of resources and limited access to appropriate training is leaving them without a way forward. We are here to support parents and teachers and provide students with the best chances to acquire critical reading and writing skills.

Is Novel a good fit for your child?

Finding the right tutor isn’t easy and can be stressful. We’re here to simplify the process and begin supporting your child’s learning journey.

  • "The OG method they use is wonderful for our daughter AND they are a kind, thoughtful, wonderful team of people committed to teaching literacy (and more) in ways that are accessible to folks with learning differences. My interaction with everyone (directors, admin, teachers) is always great. My daughter really ENJOYS her time with her amazing tutor. Love this place."

  • "I would give 6 stars if I could! My daughter was diagnosed with Dyslexia last year and it was suggested we find a tutor who was trained in OG. I googled, and emailed, and searched for months before finally finding Novel Tutoring. I can’t believe the difference in my daughter's confidence and reading ability!

    Lisa MacSween

  • "I like that we get to spell animal names, and that I got to learn how to spell "puppy"! Tutoring with Novel has helped me to get better at reading and writing, and it makes me feel happy and good!"

    Estelle, Grade 2 Student

  • "Novel has helped me with my writing, grammar, strategies for paying attention in class. I like that that I get to do physical activities and play games, not just paper and pencil. I have learned different sounds in English and how to use them in words. Now I feel more confident."
