Intensive Reading Course

Give your child a boost in literacy!

One week of 1:1 tutoring, 5 hours per day, tailored to your child’s needs, with an Orton-Gillingham tutor.

How the Course will help your child

Undivided Attention

Your child will receive one week of undivided attention from an experienced Orton-Gillingham literacy specialist. Together, they work through fun and engaging exercises.

Assessment

We start with a thorough assessment of your child’s reading strengths and gaps, and develop a customized learning plan based on your child’s specific needs and preferences.

Intensive Learning

Your child will work with a dedicated tutor in person and 1:1 for 5 hours every day for one week. Afterwards, the tutor will follow up with your child in weekly one hour lessons to solidify learnings.

Who is the Intensive Reading Course for?

The course is ideal for struggling readers and students with dyslexia, ADHD or other learning disabilities and difficulties. Most of our students see a notable increase in their reading and writing confidence at the end of the first week.

Students who take the course are usually between grade 1 and grade 8.

We currently offer this in-person course only in the Greater Toronto Area. During the course the tutor and student will meet in person at our teaching facility in Toronto/Etobicoke. Please enquire about our Online Tutoring service if you are located elsewhere.

The remedial journey for children who need help with dyslexia or ADHD can take up to two years of consistent support. Our Intensive Reading Course front-loads the learning experience with fundamental tools that work to kickstart a student’s progress and set them on a solid path towards remedial success.

Our Orton-Gillingham tutors are trained to create a positive educational environment that targets skill development and builds confident learners.

The pillars of our approach are evidence based and grounded in Structured Literacy.

Multi-sensory strategies

We offer students multi-sensory tools and strategies that help them process language using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic/tactile learning pathways, simultaneously. Students process learnings more effectively can retain concepts long-term.

Direct and explicit instruction

Orton-Gillingham has identified hundreds of patterns and consistencies in English, turning language into a math and science. We use direct and explicit instruction to teach these patterns and consistencies to our learners, and takes the guesswork out of learning how to read.

Child-centered learning

All our tutoring programs are tailored to each student’s specific learning needs. Our initial Orton-Gillingham based assessment identifies literacy gaps and leads to a customized learning plan that incorporates a student’s likes and interests as much as possible.

Basic to complex

After we know the foundational literacy gaps that the student is struggling with, our phonics tutors move from basic to complex material. We make sure that each learner is successful as they tackle new challenges so that they gain confidence in their ability to read and write.

Nicole Murray, Parent, Toronto

“I cannot say enough good things about my experience with Novel. My son used to shut down completely when trying to read (grade 2) and I knew he needed more help than I could provide. I found Novel Tutoring and put him in the 1 week intensive program over the summer and he had a blast. Working with Jessica just for that one week I could see a huge difference in his demeanour and attitude around learning. We continue to work with Jessica twice per week virtually and my son just adores her and I see improvements in his reading and most importantly, his confidence! I know it will not be a quick process but I feel like he's learning the foundations of reading and he feels supported, so happy I found them!!”
